Powermite was established in 1967 by a team of four in the West Rand, with a clear mission to serve the South African market with specialised electrical equipment for the material handling sector, particularly within the mining industry. From the outset, industrial plugs and sockets formed a key part of the solutions supplied to heavy industry.
In 1974, Powermite acquired AMPCO, a respected local manufacturer of industrial plugs and sockets, strengthening its position as a trusted supplier of high-quality industrial plugs and sockets to the South African market. This acquisition significantly expanded Powermite’s product range and reinforced its ability to deliver complete electrical solutions to industry.
By 1981, Powermite had grown into a true one-stop shop for electrical crane materials, flexible cables, and industrial plugs and sockets, supplying reliable and compliant products to demanding industrial environments. During this period, the company expanded to a staff complement of 114 employees, with its head office in Sandton and branches in Cape Town, Durban, and Richards Bay.
In 2004, Powermite and AMPCO were acquired by the Hudaco Group and became a trading division of Hudaco (Pty) Ltd, a JSE-listed company. Today, Powermite remains a leading supplier of industrial plugs and sockets, trusted across South Africa for robust, industry-approved electrical solutions.

1967
Powermite is established and begins building its reputation in flexible cable and power transfer solutions.
1974
Our AMPCO brand begins manufacturing industrial plugs and sockets. In October 2019, AMPCO launched its second-generation range conforming to IEC60309-2.
2004
Powermite joins the Hudaco Group, a respected African group specialising in the import and distribution of high-quality branded industrial and electronic products.
2025
We currently employ 121 staff members across all our divisions and our operations are all Certified in Compliance to ISO Standards.
